Short answer

In Columbus, GA the Classic is the family trip (Class I-III+, about 2 hours, ages 7+), the Challenge is the big-water trip (up to Class V, about 2.5-3 hours, ages 12+), the Carnage is the Challenge in a small four-person ninja raft for maximum surfing (ages 12+), and the Inflatable Kayak lets you paddle your own boat on Class III+ water (ages 12+). If anyone in your group is under 12, book the Classic.

All four guided trips run the same 2.5-mile course. What changes is how much water is coming through North Highlands Dam, the size of the boat, and who is allowed to go.

The Classic (ages 7+)

Runs at base flow, around 900 cfs, when the river is rocky and technical. Rapids reach Class III+ at spots like Pemberton Falls, and guides set up surfs on Good Wave by the RiverWalk. It is the right call for families, first-timers and mixed groups. You will still get soaked. Classic trip details.

The Challenge (ages 12+)

Runs on multi-unit releases of about 4,500 cfs or more. The river widens, the waves grow, and Cutbait becomes a Class IV-V hole that the outfitter ranks among the biggest rapids on the East Coast. Choose it if you want the story. Challenge trip details.

The Carnage (ages 12+)

The Challenge water in a small "ninja" raft with four guests and a senior guide. Smaller boats surf more features and feel every wave, and you are more likely to swim. Best for repeat rafters and tight crews of four. Carnage trip details.

Inflatable Kayak (ages 12+)

Your own inflatable boat on Class III+ water, with a guide shadowing you. Great for couples and solo travelers who want to steer. Inflatable Kayak details.

Our rule of thumb

Can't decide? Many visitors do the Classic first and come back for a Challenge. The outfitter's season pass covers unlimited Classic and Challenge trips. Or take the 30-second trip finder.

Frequently asked

Which Columbus rafting trip is best for beginners?
The Classic. It runs at low water with Class I-III+ rapids, takes kids 7 and up, and needs no experience. Adult beginners who want more excitement can still book the Challenge.
What is the difference between the Challenge and the Carnage?
Both run the same high-water Class V course. The Carnage uses a smaller ninja raft with four guests and a senior guide, so it surfs more and flips more.
Which trip goes through Cutbait at its biggest?
The Challenge and Carnage, which run during multi-unit dam releases when Cutbait becomes Class IV-V.
